The History and Development of Hawk Training
A Journey of Innovation and Growth in Vocational Education and Training.
Hawk Training has established itself as one of the UK’s leading providers of vocational training, apprenticeships and workforce development. The company’s journey from humble beginnings to a nationally recognised training organisation in 36 years is marked by a commitment to high-quality learning, adaptability, and an unwavering focus on developing talent and skills to meet the needs of employers and learners.
Founding and Early Years
Hawk Training was founded in the late 1980s, a period when the UK was undergoing significant economic and educational change. There was growing recognition that vocational skills and workplace-based learning were essential to drive the economy forward and reduce unemployment. From its inception, Hawk Training sought to fill this gap, providing practical, career-focused training that complemented more traditional academic routes.
The founders were, and still are, education and training specialists and initially were Local Education Advisors for the newly established government initiative – Technical Vocational Education Initiative (TVEI). This government initiative changed the content of the U.K. national curriculum to become more relevant to industry and commerce. Significantly this initiative changed the teaching methodology from didactic to learner centred experiential learning and the founders were involved in the retraining of teachers in order to deliver this major education development. This provided a vehicle when combining the commercial and industrial experience of the founders to take these teaching and learning methods into industry, which led to the creation of Hawk Training. They saw an opportunity to bridge the divide between employers seeking skilled workers and individuals looking for meaningful employment. Initially, Hawk Training focussed on a small suite of programmes, mainly in management development from first line to board room, business administration and customer service, designed to equip learners with directly applicable skills for the workplace. In order for the company to grow and expand the founders were joined by the addition of three directors who currently form the Hawk Training Board.
Expansion of Services and Sectors
As the UK government placed greater emphasis on apprenticeships during the 1990s and early 2000s, Hawk Training responded by expanding its range of services and sectors. The company invested in developing its own curriculum materials, harnessing the expertise of its tutors and workplace assessors. New programmes were rolled out in areas such as senior management, team leading, early years education, and health and social care.
The introduction of the National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) framework was a turning point. Hawk Training became an approved provider, delivering NVQs and apprenticeships funded by the government. This shift enabled the business to grow both in size and reputation, establishing long-term partnerships with local authorities, large employers, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Commitment to Quality and Innovation
From the outset, Hawk Training has been committed to quality assurance and continuous improvement. The company embraced external audit and inspection, regularly achieving recognition from national bodies such as Ofsted and the Education and Skills Funding Agency and the Department for Education. Its focus on learner welfare and personalised support set it apart from competitors, as well as achieving Grade 1 Ofsted Outstanding in 2013 and 2023. Technology also became a cornerstone of Hawk’s development. As e-learning and blended learning models emerged, Hawk Training invested in digital platforms to enhance teaching and assessment. This allowed the business to reach a wider audience, support remote learners, and adapt swiftly to changes such hybrid working practices.
Achievements and Recognition
Over the years, Hawk Training has won multiple awards and accolades for its contribution to education and skills development. It has consistently been rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, a testament to its high standards of teaching, learner support, and employer engagement. The company has also been recognised in industry awards for innovation, learner outcomes, and staff development.
Hawk’s alumni include thousands of individuals who have progressed to senior roles or embarked on new careers thanks to the skills and guidance provided by the organisation. Testimonials from employers and learners regularly highlight the practical impact Hawk Training has had on workforce development and organisational performance.
One of our founders became a founder Council Member of the Chartered Institution for Further Education which was initiated by the Rt.Hon the Lord Lingfield in 2013 to pave the way for a new Chartered Membership organisation for Colleges and Training Providers in the Further Education Sector. The Institution was granted Royal Chartered Status by Queen Elizabeth II on 9th October 2015.
Adapting to the Future of Work
As the world of work, and hybrid working continues to evolve—through the rise of AI, automation, digital skills, and new patterns of employment—Hawk Training has adapted its portfolio accordingly. The company now offers on-line programmes in leadership and management, digital skills, and other emerging sectors. It has expanded its reach geographically, working with employers and learners across the U.K, and will in 2025 launch its global portfolio of courses through Hawk Academy London.
Hawk Training also places a strong emphasis on equality of opportunity, social mobility and inclusivity, providing opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to access high-quality training and development. Its work with disadvantaged groups, young people, and those seeking career change reflects a deep-rooted commitment to making a positive impact on society.
In Conclusion
The founders are often asked why the company was named ‘Hawk’. One of the founders was mesmerised by the skills of a hawk he was watching, as it hovered at height above a field. It spotted its target with its keen vision, calculated its approach in order to achieve its objective, applying skill, resilience and determination to achieve a successful result.
