Apprenticeship Overview

The Level 5 Early Years Lead Practitioner Apprenticeship is designed for individuals who have experience in the Early Years sector and hold a Level 3 qualification. This programme aims to significantly deepen their knowledge and understanding of effective leadership in an Early Years environment. Upon completing this apprenticeship, learners will also achieve the CMI Award in Principles of Leadership and Management as an additional qualification.

Who Is This Apprenticeship For?

This apprenticeship is ideal for individuals currently working as lead practitioners in the Early Years sector, with a Level 3 qualification. It is for those who wish to enhance their leadership and management skills within an Early Years setting, taking their knowledge and experience to a more advanced level.

Learners Will

  • Be supported by a dedicated tutor with one-to-one visits every 4-6 weeks
  • Engage in a blended learning approach, combining on-the-job training, online learning modules, and two 3-hour workshops per theme
  • Develop leadership skills through knowledge and application of the Early Years sector
  • Complete a minimum of 6 hours of protected study per week

  • CMI Award in Principles of Management and Leadership
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths (if no prior exemptions)

The Apprenticeship Journey

This apprenticeship follows a blended learning approach, combining face-to-face tutorials, remote workshops, e-learning resources, and on-the-job training. Learners will receive guidance from a dedicated tutor and complete online learning modules, with a focus on leadership skills in the Early Years sector. The learning is assessed through formal tasks and is supported by 6 hours of study per week, which includes a variety of resources like online videos, workshops, and case studies.

End Point Assessment (EPA)

This programme is formally assessed using three methods:

  1. Portfolio of Evidence: Compiled throughout the apprenticeship and reviewed by an independent assessor.
  2. Observation and Q&A: A 60-minute observation followed by a 30-minute Q&A to assess practical skills and knowledge.
  3. Case Study and Presentation: A 4,000-word case study followed by a 20-minute presentation, including a Q&A session, to assess the depth of the learner’s understanding.
