From 1 April 2011, the management of community health services in Lambeth and Southwark transferred from the local Primary Care Trusts to Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, marking a new era for community services locally.

The integration of community services into GSTT provides an opportunity for staff to help shape services so they better suit patient needs, balance demands across the whole system and create a seamless care pathway for patients


Brief overview of the role
To provide an efficient and effective administrative service to designated teams within the Trust

Vacancy description

  • Assist in the provision of an efficient and courteous reception service for the trust
  • Meet and Greet visitors to the department as required
  • Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients, relatives and carers face to face and via telephone
  • Keep patients informed of any expected waiting periods or delays to appointment times
  • Support the bookings and co-ordinating of patient appointments using IT systems
  • Provide a range of administrative support functions including filing, photocopying, word processing, data inputting
  • Collect and distribute post for the department
  • Obtain clinical and non clinical records
  • Liaise with other departments and wards within the hospital
  • Assist with the ordering and maintenance of stock supplies
  • Duties may include or have an any other reasonable administrative duty as requested. 



  • Please note that some posts may be based in the community (eg not at the main hospital sites)
  • We have two main hospital sites at London Bridge and Waterloo with a number of community sites in South London

As this is a level 2 post, it is suitable for those that have little or no administration experience

Qualification:  Business Administration Apprenticeship
Level: 2
Duration: 12 months
Course Type: Apprenticeship Framework

Apprenticeship Delivery: Work based qualification. A tutor will visit you every 4-6 weeks in your work place. 

Units Covered:
The programme is spread across 12 months and typically covers 15 units with the option to take on extra stretch and challenge units if desired. These units are split into 3 themes which complement each other and create a better learning experience:

  1. Communication in Business
  2. Administrative Services and Functions
  3. Working in Business Teams

The programme will also require the apprentice to cover Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) and Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)


Functional Skills: 

  • Apprentices also work towards a Level 2 qualification in English and maths in the first half of the programme if they have no prior exemption (GCSE’s  A – C or equivalents in English and Maths).


Future prospects

  • After successful completion of the Apprenticeship candidates will be able to apply for vacancies across the NHS.
