The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is an introductory teaching qualification for those wishing to work in the Education and Training/ Post 16 sector. Achieving this Award will provide sufficient evidence that you have acquired the necessary skills and knowledge needed to prepare, plan, deliver and evaluate basic teaching and learning sessions.

Entry requirements:

Level 2 English, maths and ICT (e.g. GCSE A* - C, Level 2 Functional Skills, Level 2 Key Skills, etc).

Qualification requirements:

This introductory, knowledge-based teaching qualification has no minimum teaching practice requirement. Therefore, it may be undertaken by individuals who are not in a teaching or training role. However, there is a minimum requirement to take part in micro–teaching.

Learners must be free to attend our offices on set dates to deliver their micro teach and observe the practice of other learners completing the course. If travel to our centre in Twickenham is difficult, you can opt to deliver your teaching session and observe others using Skype.

Course overview:

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training prepares trainee teachers and trainers to teach in a wide range of post sixteen contexts (e.g. FE Colleges, Adult Education, Private Training Providers, etc).

This qualification can meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers and trainers, including:

  • individuals who are not currently teaching and training but who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements of the qualification
  • individuals who are currently teaching and training, including those who have just begun teaching and training and who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements of the qualification
  • individuals currently working as assessors who wish to achieve a teaching qualification and who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice of the qualification.

What will I learn?

In order to achieve the Level 4 Certificate in Education & Training, you will study the following units:

  • Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in Education and Training

Course requirements

Entry requirements:

If you wish to enrol on this course you should be able to demonstrate literacy, language, numeracy and ICT skills up to a level 2 standard (e.g. GCSE A* - C, L2 Functional Skills, L2 Key Skills, etc).

Qualification requirements:

To achieve this qualification, there is a requirement for teaching/training practice that requires observation and assessment of your performance. You must therefore currently be working in a teaching/training role.

You must be able to demonstrate via a teaching log 30 hours of teaching/training practice, of which 3 hours must be observed by an appropriately qualified teacher/trainer (i.e. someone who possesses one of the following qualifications: DTLLS, DET, Cert Ed., PGCE, etc). If you are unable to have your practice observed by a suitably qualified person, we can organise for your tutor to observe you when you teach for an additional fee of £125 (exc. VAT).

 

What does this qualification qualify me to do?

Achievement of the Level 4 Certificate in Education & Training will give you potential opportunities to work in a variety of teaching/training roles such as:

  • FE Colleges
  • Work-based Learning Providers
  • Adult and Community Education

Getting qualified doesn’t have to be expensive

The Advanced Learner Loans are operated by the Student Loans Company. The Student Loans Company provides financial support to students across the UK wanting to study by taking out a loan in the UK. Learners are entitled to access up to four loans, which they can take out either one after the other or at the same time from Levels 3 to 6. These loans help you to pay the fees of a qualification with the expectation to pay it back once you earn £21,000 a year or more.

Eligibility

You must be 19 or older on the first day of your course.

Your course must be:

A Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 qualification, eg 'A' Levels or graduate certificate at an approved college or training provider in England

Residency status:

Resident in the UK on the first day of your course
Resident in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man for 3 years before starting your course
UK national or have ‘settled status’ (this means there are no restrictions on how long you can stay)

You may also qualify if you’re:

A UK national, or someone with settled status, but you live somewhere else in the European Economic Area (EEA)
An EU national or a family member of one

Loan repayments

Repayments start the April following the completion of your course.

You pay back your loan (plus interest) when you finish your course and earn more than £21,000 a year. If you stop work or your income drops below £21,000 a year then your repayments will stop.

Your employer should work out your repayments and take them out of your salary with your tax.

At any point, you can pay some or your entire loan at any time without any extra charge.

Does interest apply to Advanced Learner Loans?

Yes, you pay interest from the time your first payment is made until you pay your loan back in full. 

·    While you’re studying and until the April after you leave the course interest = Rate of inflation (Retail Price Index) plus 3%

·    £21,000 or less = Rate of inflation

·    £21,000 to £41,000 = Rate of inflation plus up to 3%

·    £41,000 and over = Rate of inflation plus 3%

You can pay for your qualification directly

In some cases you may wish to pay for the course directly or your chosen qualification may not be funded through a loan.
